The sub-regional expert meeting on "Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and Building Resilience to Climate Change and Its Impacts in Western and Central Asia, with a special focus on the role of non-governmental actors" was held on 18 and 19 October 2023 in Isfahan. This meeting was held in two specialized international and national sections, hosted by the Tehran ICH Centre of UNESCO (Regional Research Centre for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in West and Central Asia) and in collaboration with the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP) and the Persian Garden Institute for Living Heritage.
The international section of this meeting was held with the presence and speeches of representatives from 11 countries, Afghanistan, Armenia, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Turkey, as well as the opening speech of Susan Schnuttgen, Chief of the Capacity Building and Heritage Policy Unit at UNESCO.
In the national section, after the speech of Ali Darabi, Vice Minister for Culture, Deputy for Cultural Heritage of Iran, and Chair of the Governing Council of the Tehran ICH Centre, and Atousa Momeni, Director-General of the Tehran ICH Centre, some deputies and managers of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts and cultural non-governmental organisations discussed and exchanged their views and experiences on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and building resilience to climate change. Moreover, in this section, Shahab Nikman, Shahab Nikman, the managing director of Mana Naqsh Heritage Institute for Art & Culture, gave a speech on "Strengthening the Role of Non-Governmental Organisations in Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage".
